Preble Secondary Autism Focus teacher Katie Vande Castle received a 2023 GBAPS Education Foundation grant to fund an additional sensory room at Preble High School for students with autism.
The sensory room, located in Vande Castle’s classroom, is a place students can go to calm down if they are feeling dysregulated.
Included in the sensory room are fidgets, chairs for comfort, and seats for movement.
The room can be made dim and quiet, allowing students to take a break from overwhelming stimuli and return to class ready to learn.
According to Vande Castle, Preble High School has seen a decrease in specific student referrals and an increase in time spent learning since the room has been in full operation.
